Learn-To-Row Classes

So you wanna learn how to row?
We don't blame you—rowing is fun, rewarding, and a wonderful way to keep fit.
Read on to find out what our learn-to-row lessons are like. You may sign up below to be notified when we post our schedule for the coming season.

Harlem River Community Rowing is offering at least four summer sessions of learn-to-row classes. Participants will get approximately 18 hours of hands-on training in the following rowing fundamentals:

  •  basic understanding of boating rules and safety procedures
  •  working knowledge of rowing commands
  •  basic proficiency in sculling and/or sweep rowing
  •  overview of rowing equipment
  •  steering commands for bowing and coxing

Classes can accommodate people at most fitness levels and ages, from the late teens and up. It’s mandatory for safety reasons, however, that you are a competent swimmer. After completing all your classes, you'll have the skills needed to join our novice rowing program.

WHEN?

Learn-to-row sessions, each consisting of eight classes, are generally held on one weekend morning from 8 a.m. to
11 a.m., and one weeknight evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Students interested in a session MUST be available for all classes in that session.

HOW?

We can only take a limited number of students per session/group, and the list of interested students is long; contact learn-to-row coordinator Jenny at jenny@harlemrivercr.org to indicate which session you're interested in. It's first come, first served. She'll send you registration materials to be completed and returned in order to secure your spot.

COST?

$150 per person (reduced fees are available for participants who qualify); sorry, no refunds.

WHERE?

Practice takes place on the Harlem River at Roberto Clemente State Park, Bronx. Directions can be found at www.harlemrivercommunityrowing.org/rcspdirections.
